Our Mission
There are so many loud and conflicting voices in the wild horse world.

Ranchers and cattlemen calling for the wild horses to be eradicated from our public lands.
​
Some photographers or advocates, who want all free-roaming horses to remain wild and free forever, without management or oversight.
​
Mustang adopters, who are eager to provide hundreds of examples of formerly wild equines who have safe homes and happy domestic lives.
​
In all of this, there is one notable voice missing -- the voices of the wild horses themselves.
​
Our job at Starlight Mustang Sanctuary is to listen to and promote the voices of these formerly wild equines, each of whom are individuals with their own personalities and opinions and voices.
​
Some of these formerly wild equines will do great in a domestic setting, and for those we will work to give them the skills they need to adapt to domestic life, and we will search until we find them a safe and loving permanent home. Starlight Mustang Sanctuary is determined that none of the equines that pass through our hands end up in a kill pen. Therefore, we will never sell any equines that we rescue. Horses and burros appropriate for domestic life may be leased by approved individuals for a small annual fee, but the Sanctuary will maintain ownership of all equines.

Other formerly wild equines will want little to do with humans, and for those, since we cannot release them back into the wild, we will give them the next best thing. We will provide them with a safe haven, a sanctuary with food, water, and vet / farrier care, but a place where they can live as they prefer -- outdoors on the range with the sunshine on their backs and the desert wind in their manes, on their own terms and making their own choices, for the rest of their natural lives.

We also hope to be leaders to unite the diverse hearts and minds in the equine rescue community. Instead of fighting and competing amongst ourselves, we need to unite our passions and partner together for the good of all the horses.
